授業の目的?内容 ／Course Objectives	This one-semester course is compulsory for second-year students. Overall Objectives 1. To increase academic vocabulary and to further the development of vocabulary/vocabulary building skills in general 2. To automatize more accurate grammatical knowledge and recognize cohesive devices 3. To develop a better understanding of various styles and purposes of reading material 4. To develop effective reading skills (intensive reading, extensive reading, etc.) 5. To introduce students to authentic texts/outside readers This course focuses on improving students’ "vocabulary," "grammar," "reading" skills and their "competence to think critically in English as well as hold discussions in English, without using Japanese" as stated in DP 2. Overall objectives are for students to acquire the basics of "written receptive skills" stated in the CP.
授業の形式?方法と履修上の注意 ／Teaching method and Attention the course	This course is taught in English. Classes will be conducted using the textbook listed below. Students are required to purchase the textbook before the first class from stores such as the university bookstore DUO. Feedbacks will be given verbally and or in writing whenever deemed necessary, especially after in-class exercises. Porta II and University Web-Mail System will be used as the essential tools of communication. Students are expected to prepare an appropriate Internet environment to use these tools constantly. Including the first class, classes will be conducted in a face-to-face environment only. 科目の特性上、授業は対面形式のみで行います。
事前?事後学修の内容 ／Before After Study	Students are expected to prepare for each class by reviewing lecture and class discussion notes. Students are expected to spend around 2 hours for this process.
